A High School Senior's Experience with Civic Mapping for Global Change

Hi my name is Hagan Quigley, and I am a member of James B. Conant High School's TeenMaptivists Chapter. I am in my senior year and a part of TeenMaptivist in my social science senior survey class. I was introduced to civic mapping as a part of my informed action component for civic engagement through my teacher, Ms. Serrano.

It has been a fun experience being able to help people through civic mapping. It was interesting to look at the areas we were mapping and seeing how they are different from my area and some of the areas I worked on in the past. I noticed different things between them.

One of the projects was mapping for climate resistance in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The area has been susceptible to heavy climate change. By mapping we are helping decision makers and urban planners by keeping up to date information through mapping where it is especially important in underdeveloped areas. By mapping it has opened my eyes to how important things like mapping are.

I feel empowered that I was able to help and do my part. I hope that my contributions will help the people in need and I am glad to be a part of it.
