Mapping for Emergency Response

December

Emergency Response is perhaps one of the most commonly known applications of open source mapping. Having access to an accurate and relevant map is crucial when it comes to evacuation planning, search and rescue, and delivery of aid to those who may be affected by a natural or anthropogenic disaster. Not only do these resources help assist in disaster preparedness, but they are vital to saving lives when all other prevention measures fall short. Government agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employ geospatial professionals specifically for this purpose. However, in recent decades, participatory mapping from volunteers has become an important and significant contributor to managing the aftermath of disasters both in the U.S and internationally.
