Mapping for Change: Just a Click Away!

My name is Maddie Boudakh and I am a senior at James B. Conant High School. My senior

survey teacher, Mrs. Serrano, introduced me to civic mapping during class, and now we map once a week to help out communities.

As my informed action, I mapped communities in Georgia that are affected by natural disasters and never recovered. Something new that I learned from civic mapping was how different communities, within the United States, can be from one another due to social, cultural, and economic factors. Seeing how people live in disenfranchised and unsafe areas has changed my perspective of life in the U.S., and it has helped me understand that it isn’t easy for everyone. It also made me realize how there is still systematic discrimination against people of color all across the United States. With our use of humanitarian mapping in Georgia, hopefully these people can be recognized and get the help that they need to get back on track to their daily lives.

Humanitarian mapping has taught me that getting involved in your community or other communities is so important and it isn’t hard to do. Helping someone else is literally just a click away. Hopefully TeenMaptivists can encourage more high schoolers around the world to help people in need.
