OSM Sandbox Projects - Map Your Schools!

We recommend new chapters/mappers practice skills in the sandbox, an unmapped blank canvas where you can practice skills with no risk to other map features! Each chapter in our network has their own sandbox project centered around their high school.

Native OSM Project - Marshall Co, IN: Michigan Road

More experienced mappers are welcome to map projects in Native OpenStreetMap, like this one centered around the historic Michigan Road! Construction of the Michigan Road began in the 1830's. It ran from Madison to Michigan City via Indianapolis, and was known as Indiana's first "super highway".  It's existence was first made possible through a treaty forged between the state of Indiana and the Pottawatomie in 1826, which allowed for a 100ft wide ribbon of land to stretch from the Ohio River (In Madison) to Lake Michigan (In Michigan City). This substantial change to the state's transportation networks spurred economic growth and increased settlement in the communities along it's route.

Mapping Workflow

1. Go to https://tasks.teachosm.org/projects/1660
2. Sign in with your OSM Credentials
3. Read the instructions
4. Click 'Contribute'
5. Select an available mapping square
6. Start mapping! For this project, we are only mapping buildings.
7. Make sure to save every 10 edits using your chapter hashtag  (#TeenMaptivists #TM_SchoolInitials)
8. When you are done mapping, indicate that the square is not completely mapped (while we are only mapping buildings, the project requests roads, so we will not mark the cell as completely mapped) and click 'Submit'

Mobile & Field Mapping Tools!

Tired of the traditional armchair mapping approach? Consider utilizing these tools to get students up and out of the classroom for on the ground data collection! FieldPapers, MapSwipe, and other resources allow chapters to participate in the mapping process using a mobile device or simple print outs!
